History

Inspired by Chan Buddhism, Chun-Chao Chiu repeatedly inscribed the poem Heart Sutra on rice paper and the surface of the gallery over a period of 3 weeks. The artist hoped that the meaning of the poem would be understood not only by visitors who could read the text, but also others who observe the ‘meaning’ through his performance of copying the text. Each Chinese character was brushed by hand as the artist intimately connected his brush to his emotions, recording his feeling and thoughts on the wall of the gallery. A single stroke representing an outwardly recording of the artist’s inner senses.  Part of the ‘New Commissions’ scheme.
