To mark the 30th anniversary of the Centre, the Centre presented an exhibition based upon Xu Bing’s Book from the Ground, a novel written in a “language of icons”.

The novel depicts 24 hours in the life of an ordinary office worker, Mr Black. The book is written in Xu's universal language, a language devised from symbols, pictograms and emoticons, which is designed to be understood by anyone in the modern world no matter what language they speak. The exhibition in Gallery 1 also included a recreation of the artist's studio where he spent seven years devising his universal language.
