Ping Qiu is a Swiss Chinese artist, currently living in Berlin, who developed ceramic works during her residency celebrating the female form and female strength, with particular reference to child birth. The residency was held in collaboration with Birth Rites, a curatorial project, led by curator Helen Knowles, which explored the politics and practice of giving birth through contemporary art works.

Birth Rites brought together contemporary artists with childbirth professionals to inspire new artworks. In April 2007, Ping Qui had spent a month at the Farm Midwifery Centre, Tennessee, working with its founder, Ina May Gaskin, a lay midwife, activist and author of the 1970’s cult text, Spiritual Midwifery.

The residency at the Centre gave the artist the space to reflect upon her placement and create new works which meditated on the beginnings of life, and the social, cultural and political implications of how women give birth.  The works were presented in an open studio between 17th - 21st February.
