Biography

The British Art Show (BAS) is a major survey exhibition organised every five years by the Hayward Gallery at the Southbank Centre. The exhibition provides a showcase of British contemporary artists. Since 2000, the show has toured various cities in the UK and the works are presented across several venues. 

The show visited Manchester for the first time in 1995 as British Art Show 4 (BAS4). The exhibition, coordinated by Stephen Snoddy, was held at venues across the city including Upper Campfield Market, Castlefield Gallery, Cornerhouse, City Art Galleries, Manchester Metropolitan Gallery, the Chinese Arts Centre and the Whitworth Gallery.

In 2006, British Art Show 6 (BAS 6) celebrated inventiveness, vitality and diversity of British art. The exhibition toured venues in Gateshead, Manchester, Nottingham and Bristol. The Manchester leg of the exhibition was held at Urbis, The International 3, Manchester City Art Gallery, Whitworth Art Gallery, Cornerhouse, and the .
